The BYU Socialist Conspiracy!

If the above article was a person, I’d marry it. That’s how much love is in my heart right now. If you don’t feel like reading the whole thing, you’re lazy. But I’ll provide one of my favorite parts to whet your appetite:

“As proof that his alarm is more than just alarmism, Norton offers this quote from LDS Church President Ezra Taft Benson: “I feel to warn you that one of the chief means of misleading our youth and destroying the family unit is our educational institutions. There is more than one reason why the Church is advising our youth to attend colleges close to their homes where institutes of religion are available. It gives the parents the opportunity to stay close to their children, and if they become alerted and informed, these parents can help expose the deceptions of men like Sigmund Freud, Charles Darwin, John Dewey, John Keynes and others. There are much worse things today that can happen to a child than not getting a full education.”

That should be enough to give local parents pause, Norton said.

“So is enculturating our young into a social and political democracy harmless?” Norton said. “Hardly. When a group of people set on a deliberate course of action to subvert the moral fabric of a society in the goal to eliminate the worship of deity and replace it with the worship of man, we come to the crossroads of our culture, and must make that final decision as to who the God of this land really is.”

BYU, people. He’s talking about BYU. Pretty soon they’ll be replacing “Enter to learn, go forth to serve” with “Subverting the moral fabric of society.”

I did a crash course on John Goodlad, and found this:

Wow. I’m so glad someone’s trying to stop this subversive agenda before it really catches on.

Funny, I just checked out several books by Dewey as part of my lit review for my thesis project. I’m a socialist!

Seriously though, though you can probably find ridiculous people arguing for every viewpoint, people who maintain this viewpoint actually scare me. Arguing for your own version of religious education and/or government necessarily ignores the fact that others in the world view things differently than you, and even if you think they’re wrong, it doesn’t change the fact that THEY think they’re right, and if both parties are not willing to compromise (by, say, keeping religion out of schools), then conflict or complete separation are the only options. That’s a rather Old Testament kind of logic: if you’re not the chosen people, if yours isn’t the right religion, it’s okay to obliterate you.

Christ came and gave a higher law, a law that requires us to love our enemies instead of killing them. Loving our enemies means living with them, and living with them means finding routes of governance and education that enrich the public generally. “Come, let us reason together…”

Dewey’s (and others’) thoughts often refer to liberating students from oppressive educational models and encouraging critical engagement between teachers and students. He believed that education was a key component of our evolution (read: development), and that it was the key to creating a just world.

The last time I checked, our church (is it bad that I just assume that the people that fear their own brand of socialism are Mormon Glenn Beck-watchers?) is against oppression. Just saying.

Last I saw, no one was trying to restrict my ability to practice my religion, and no one was trying to stop me from teaching my (hypothetical) children anything.

I like your proposed BYU motto change: Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Subverse. (wordpress doesn’t like me verb-ing subversive…)

Did you know that for the past 8 years I have been studying Goodlad. So has Dad. There’s a coalition formed with 4 school districts and BYU. As Dean, dad would go to meetings. I’d try to accompany him. After all: get an educator in for free to see this guy. Our school district still studies the moral dimensions and I’m part of that group.

Having taught for many years I know first hand how parents can get very uptight about curriculum. As your parent I got rather uptight about you learning about sex in the 2nd grade. BUT that said, I do think it’s important to know that there are people out in the world who might think, feel, and act differently. Parents MUST supply the foundation of belief in their home; there’s no other way. If kids don’t go to school in Utah, or don’t go to college at BYU (or sometimes if they do) they will, at some point, have to decide what truth is and how to find it–IN EVERYTHING.

That said, I will also say that having taught humanities for over 15 years, it becomes very clear to me what the purpose of the world is, at least Western Culture. We didn’t wake up one morning and decide to become evolutionists. There has always been a slow chipping away of the hold of Christianity. In many ways that’s good–JS wasn’t burned at the stake. In other ways, we’ve thrown the baby out with the bath water (to use a trite phrase).

What is fascinating to look at is the juxtaposition of the restoration of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, the industrial revolution, the explosion of knowledge, and the increase in population. When REAL truth finally arrived on the earth, REAL progress in science and knowledge happened. But it’s like a game of chess between God and Satan. I’m just glad I know who will ultimately win and whose side I want to be on.

By “coalition” do you really mean…conspiracy?

Wasn’t it 3rd grade that my class went to the Lawrence Hall of Science? Mr. Liebman or something?

It was either second or third. You did have a male teacher whose name started with “L.” You actually went to a former elementary school by the Claremont Hotel; I think it was called Muir Elementary. Due to Martha Jones’s campaigning and an excellent talk given by your father to the Berkeley Board of Education, Muir was closed and Emerson was kept open. It was quite the coup. So the board turned Muir into a learning center.

At Back-to-School night, we were informed of Mr L’s intentions to show this film. We could request to preview the film. I was the only parent that took advantage of that option. Kind of sad in a way.

well-qualified teachers? an educated and responsible populace? what a terrible idea! why on earth would we want that? wow. i went to oak norton’s site. weirdo. lots of half truths and things taken out of context. it reminds me of glenn beck. if BYU is part of a socialist take-over conspiracy, then i’m a die-hard scrapbooker. somebody should inform all the general authorities that ARE IN CHARGE OF BYU of this disturbing plan.
